House of Representatives Leadership Pledges Support to President Tinubu, Donates N705m to Humanitarian Efforts

The leadership of the House of Representatives joined President Bola Tinubu for an Iftar (breaking of the Ramadan fast) at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Monday, where they reaffirmed their support for the President and made a significant donation of N705 million half of their monthly salaries towards the government’s humanitarian efforts.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the invitation and for his consistent respect and concern for the legislature. In his remarks, Abbas highlighted the reflective nature of Ramadan, urging both Christians and Muslims to use the time to pray for the nation, its economy, improved security, and its leadership.

“As we all know, the month of Ramadan entails many things, one of them being reflection. Where were we before? Where are we now? And where do we want to be?” he said, emphasizing that this period provides a crucial opportunity for Nigerians to reflect and pray for the country’s future.

Earlier, Vice President Kashim Shettima, speaking on behalf of President Tinubu, called on National Assembly leaders to prioritize unity and national development above partisan divisions. Shettima urged lawmakers to embrace their roles with humility and a shared commitment to progress, stating that the task of nation-building must not be overshadowed by personal or political battles.

“This sacred month of reflection and renewal reminds us to choose stability over strife, collaboration over conflict, and dialogue over discord,” Shettima remarked. “In the end, history will not judge us by the number of personal battles we fought against one another, but by the bridges we were able to build together.”

Reflecting on the significance of Ramadan, Shettima also emphasized Nigeria’s unity, stating, “What binds us as a nation is far greater than what divides us.” He commended President Tinubu’s leadership, calling him a leader of vision and inclusivity, who sees the lawmakers as partners in the nation’s collective journey toward progress.

“The economy has turned the corner, and we are now on the path to sustained growth,” Shettima said, assuring Nigerians that with perseverance, the government would create a Nigeria where every citizen can thrive.

He also praised Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and the leadership of the House of Representatives for their role in fostering harmony within the legislature, noting that unity in the House is essential for the country’s development.

“There can be no development without peace, and there can be no peace without development. The unity within the House is a testament to our collective resolve to move Nigeria forward,” Shettima added.

In his conclusion, the Vice President urged all leaders to govern with empathy, fairness, and justice, stressing that leadership is not about personal gain but about serving the people. He reminded the lawmakers that their positions were a sacred trust, with their impact measured by the legacy they leave behind.
