Benin Republic’s head coach and former Super Eagles manager, Gernot Rohr, has expressed his determination to keep his team at the top of Group C in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers as the series enters match-day five and six.
Benin is currently joint-top in the group with seven points, level with Nigeria but trailing South Africa and Rwanda on goal difference. Rohr’s side will face Zimbabwe in Durban, South Africa, on Thursday before returning to their base in Abidjan for a clash with South Africa next Tuesday.
Rohr admitted he was surprised to see Benin among the leaders but is confident they can maintain their position through the upcoming matches.
“It’s really a surprise that we, Rwanda, and South Africa are at the top after the first four rounds in this tough Group C,” Rohr told Nation Sports. “We won our last two games in Abidjan, and now we face Zimbabwe away and South Africa in Abidjan on March 25. It’s surprising, but we are here and we want to stay here and do even better.”
After four matches, Rohr’s team has secured two wins, including a 2-1 victory over Nigeria last June. They have also drawn one match and lost one.
Meanwhile, Nigeria sits fifth in the group with just three points, having failed to win any of their matches. Under new coach Eric Chelle, the Super Eagles will play Rwanda in Kigali on Friday and host Zimbabwe in Uyo next Tuesday.
