The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has voiced strong support for President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Ministry’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Matawalle described the move as essential for restoring stability to the state’s volatile political environment.
He emphasized that the state of emergency is a necessary step to address the ongoing political crisis that has hindered democratic governance and the welfare of the people in Rivers State. Reflecting on the President’s address, Matawalle acknowledged the severity of the crisis and the urgent need for intervention.
Matawalle also pointed to the governor’s demolition of the House of Assembly, which has left the state without a functioning legislature for over fourteen months, exacerbating the political deadlock and impairing the government’s ability to serve the people. He referred to the Supreme Court’s recent ruling, which reinforced the need for a functioning legislature and condemned the governor’s actions as unconstitutional.
The minister expressed concern over recent reports of vandalism and militant threats, stressing the need for a collective effort to restore peace and security. He reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting citizens and vital infrastructure in Rivers State.
“The Nigerian Military is on high alert to safeguard government facilities and ensure the security of citizens,” the statement read, adding that any attempts to disrupt public order would be met with a decisive response from security forces.
Matawalle urged all stakeholders to seize the opportunity for renewed governance and cooperation, expressing hope that the state of emergency will lead to a peaceful and democratic Rivers State that benefits all its residents
