Warri Rugby Rumble Set for April

Rugby returns to the Warri axis of Delta State with the exciting Warri Rugby Rumble, scheduled to take place from April 4-7, 2025, at Nana Model College in Warri.

The event will feature a series of rugby challenge matches between the South-South rugby champions, Edo State’s male rugby teams, and the Warri Rugby Football Club. The competition will include seven, 10, and 15-aside matches. The visiting team, which recently qualified for the National Rugby League Finals, will use the encounter as part of their warm-up for upcoming competitions.

Victor Nwachukwu, the coach of Warri Eagles Rugby Club, expressed his excitement about hosting the South Zonal champions in Warri for the first time in many years, thanks to the efforts of veteran and senior rugby players in the region.

“Rugby has been part of Warri since the early years when oil was discovered. We’ve participated in various national rugby tournaments in Lagos, Jos, and Abuja, and we have players in the national male teams,” Nwachukwu said.

He also highlighted the significance of the event, crediting Mr. Aghogho Peace Ejiro, a former local player who now plays for the London Chargers Rugby League and Nigeria’s Stallion 7’s in the UK. Ejiro, a successful businessman, is giving back to the community and the sport that helped shape his career.

Visitors from Lagos, Abuja, Edo, Asaba, and even England are expected to attend the rugby spectacle.

Warri South Local Government Chairman, Weyinmi Agbateyiniro, has also expressed his support for the event, emphasizing the importance of reviving rugby in the Warri region.
