The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that it has now received the contact addresses, telephone numbers, and e-mail addresses of the representatives who submitted the petition to recall Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central.
On Tuesday, INEC had acknowledged receiving the petition but noted that it did not meet the necessary requirements for consideration. The electoral body had pointed out that the petitioners’ representatives failed to include their contact information as mandated by Clause 1(f) of INEC’s Regulations and Guidelines for Recall.
However, on Wednesday, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, provided an update, revealing that the missing details had now been submitted in a letter dated March 26, 2025, and addressed to the Chairman of INEC.
As outlined in Clause 2(a) of the Commission’s Regulations and Guidelines for Recall 2024, Olumekun confirmed that a letter has also been sent to notify Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan of the receipt of the petition. This notification was delivered to her official address and was also copied to the presiding officer of the Senate. Furthermore, the letter has been published on INEC’s official website.
The next step, according to Olumekun, is for the Commission to verify the list of signatories submitted by the petitioners to ensure that the petition is backed by more than 50% of the registered voters in the Kogi Central Constituency. This verification process will take place in the coming days, and the Commission has pledged to publicly release the results, which will determine the subsequent course of action.
INEC assured the public that the entire process will be conducted with transparency and openness.
