
The Defence Headquarters has confirmed that it is investigating the incident involving military personnel at the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKDC) in Lagos. The incident, which was captured in a viral video, showed armed soldiers in military uniforms storming the IKDC headquarters. The video, which circulated widely, depicted some staff members running for safety as the soldiers caused a commotion.
Speaking during a televised interview, the Chief of Defence Civil-Military Relations Rear Admiral Olusanya Bankole, acknowledged that there were underlying issues leading to the altercation. However, he emphasized that the behavior exhibited in the video was not reflective of the military’s conduct or values.
He assured that the matter is being taken seriously and that sanctions will be imposed on anyone found guilty of unprofessional behavior. Rear Admiral Bankole stated, “What happened at Ikeja Disco is being viewed seriously at the Defence Headquarters and headquarters of the Nigerian Air Force. Whatever sanctions need to be meted out will be.”
Bankole also confirmed that the Nigerian Air Force and the IKDC are addressing the issues that led to the incident. He stressed that the military is committed to ensuring that such incidents do not reflect the values and discipline upheld by the armed forces.
The Rear Admiral also highlighted that the military is actively working on sensitizing the public to better understand the role of the armed forces. He reiterated that the military is there to protect the civilian population and should not be seen as a threat.
Bankole explained, “People should not feel scared when they see people in uniform; the men in uniform are meant to protect you.” He emphasized that the military is dedicated to protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity and the safety of its citizens.
Military’s Commitment to Protecting Society: Reaffirming the importance of the military’s relationship with civilians, Bankole stated that the military relies on intelligence from the public to carry out its functions effectively. He emphasized that military service is a noble profession and is committed to safeguarding both national security and human well-being.
Looking ahead, Rear Admiral Bankole pointed out that under the leadership of General Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff, the military will work to restore its reputation and earn the respect of the populace through consistent professionalism and integrity.
