Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has approved the reconstruction of the long-neglected Omenuko Bridge at Ozuabam in the Arochukwu Local Government Area. The bridge, which has served as a critical link between Abia North and Abia Central Senatorial Zones, has been in a dilapidated state for decades, posing significant risks to commuters.
The bridge’s narrow design allows only one vehicle to pass at a time, and during the rainy season, floodwaters often submerge it, exacerbating the danger. The structure is located at the base of a hill and sharp bend, making it even more hazardous. Tragically, the bridge has been the site of several fatal accidents, including those involving students travelling for their JAMB examinations.
The State Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, made the announcement during a briefing at the Government House in Umuahia following a meeting of the State Executive Council chaired by Governor Otti. Kanu emphasized that politicians had long exploited the dilapidated state of the bridge, making unfulfilled promises to the local people. However, with the Governor’s approval, the reconstruction project is set to begin soon, with the official flag-off to be announced shortly.
Kanu also mentioned that the reconstruction of the Omenuko Bridge would significantly benefit the local communities, improving transportation and safety for residents.
In addition to this, Kanu disclosed that the state government has submitted the Abia State Electricity Bill to the state House of Assembly for consideration. A public hearing on the bill is scheduled for December 18, 2024, where all relevant stakeholders are invited to provide input. The Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Ikechukwu Monday, explained that the bill is a critical step toward achieving the Governor’s goal of providing reliable electricity to all residents of Abia State.
