The Abia State Government announced on Tuesday that it will begin paying the new minimum wage of N70,000 starting in October 2024.
This decision was communicated during a press briefing following the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.
Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, emphasized the state government’s commitment to supporting workers, stating, “This was because of its disposition towards workers in the state.” He noted that the payment of the new minimum wage would commence within the next few days.
Kanu acknowledged the existence of a national minimum wage but indicated that the state may choose to deviate from it if the governor decides. Commissioner for Labour and Productivity, Sunny Onwuma, confirmed that Abia will be adhering to the national minimum wage of N70,000.
In addition to the wage announcement, Kanu revealed plans for nine new road projects to be initiated across the three senatorial zones of the state, underscoring the government’s focus on infrastructure development.
