Abure-led Labour Party disowns new caretaker chairman

The opposition Labour Party has been plunged into further turmoil as the Julius Abure-led faction disowned the newly appointed caretaker chairman, Nenadi Usman.

The decision was made at the Labour Party’s extended stakeholders meeting held at the Banquet Hall of the Abia State Government House in Umuahia, Abia State capital on Wednesday.

Reacting, the Abure-led faction rejected the caretaker committee, insisting that Abure remains the legitimate national chairman.

In statement signed by the Labour Party’s Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, Nenadi’s appointment was described as ‘illegal and unconstitutional.

Despite a previous Court of Appeal judgment affirming Abure as National Chairman, the Labour Party National Convention constituted a caretaker committee, sparking controversy.

Earlier, Senator Usman was declared as the chairman of a 29-member national caretaker committee of the Labour Party.

The announcement was made by the 2023 Presidential candidate of the party, Peter Obi.
