Actor John Dumelo wins parliamentary election in Ghana
Ghanaian actor-turned-politician John Dumelo has secured a seat in parliament, representing the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency.
Dumelo, running on the platform of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), triumphed in the 2024 Ghanaian general elections held on Saturday, securing 40,561 votes. He defeated the incumbent, Lydia Alhassan of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who received 27,377 votes.
This victory marks a significant turn after Dumelo’s narrow defeat to Alhassan in the 2020 elections. Now 40 years old, Dumelo expressed heartfelt gratitude to his supporters and vowed to fulfill his campaign promises.
“The people of Ghana have been calling for change, and they’ve shown that if you don’t perform well or if you’re arrogant, they will vote you out,” Dumelo said. “This is a valuable lesson for everyone. It’s not about money; it’s about the development of the people and addressing their needs.”
He further committed to working hard over the next four years to bring about meaningful change and steer Ghana in the right direction.
Dumelo, who began his acting career in 1991 with the film Baby Thief, has since built a successful career in both Ghanaian and Nigerian cinema. He has appeared in numerous popular productions, including Away Bus, The Game, Black Men Rock, One Night in Vegas, The King is Mine, and Four Play.
