Ademola Lookman, a winger from Nigeria, was selected the Europa League Player of the Week after his outstanding performance in Atalanta’s semifinal victory over Marseille.
Over the course of the two legs, the 26-year-old was in incredible form, tallying one goal and dishing out another assist as Atalanta achieved a historic 4-1 aggregate victory to advance to their first-ever European final.
In the second leg in Bergamo, Lookman scored the first goal of the match by putting the ball in the goal from the edge of the box, capping a brilliant team play.
The Super Eagles star at the AFCON 2023 then teed up Matteo Ruggeri to make it 2-0 in the second half as Atalanta took control of proceedings.
His performance on the night was enough to see off stiff competition from Roma goalkeeper Mile Svilar, who made 12 saves against Bayer Leverkusen, to claim the prestigious Player of the Week accolade.
It caps an incredible campaign for Lookman in Italy, with the skilful wideman contributing 20 goals and assists in all competitions this season for the Serie A club.
Gian Piero Gasperini’s side and Lookman will now take on fellow Nigerians Victor Boniface and Nathan Tella of Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League final in Dublin on May 22nd.
And on this form, Lookman will surely be one of Atalanta’s biggest threats as they bid to get their hands on the trophy for the first time in their history against the German outfit.
