The Confederation of African Football’s Disciplinary Committee has awarded the Super Eagles of Nigeria three points and three goals following their abandoned match against Libya in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, initially scheduled for October 15 in Benghazi.
In a statement released Saturday, Disciplinary Board Chair Ousmane Kane ruled that the Libyan Football Federation (LFF) violated Article 31 of the Africa Cup of Nations Regulations and Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.
“The Libyan Football Federation is found to have breached Article 31 of the Africa Cup of Nations Regulations, as well as Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code,” the ruling stated.
“Match No. 87, Libya v Nigeria, of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers 2025…is declared lost by forfeit by Libya (with a record of 3-0).”
Along with the forfeiture, the LFF was fined USD 50,000, payable within 60 days.
This decision moves Nigeria closer to securing a spot in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, as they now lead their group with 10 points from four matches, while Libya remains at the bottom with only one point.
The Super Eagles are now just one point away from qualification; a win or draw against Benin Republic on November 14 will guarantee their place in the finals set for Morocco in December 2025/January 2026.
The Nigerian team had initially boycotted the Libya game, citing safety concerns after being stranded at Al-Abraq Airport near Benghazi for over 22 hours.
Responding to the judgment, the LFF has alleged that the Nigeria Football Federation failed to cooperate on travel logistics and claimed similar treatment for the Libyan team in Nigeria during their previous encounter.
