AFN holds Olympics, African Champs Trials June 16-18

The Nigeria National Trials will take place at Sam Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City on June 16–18, 2024. Invitations to participate have been given out by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria to States Athletics Associations, military and paramilitary organisations, all institutions, and athletic clubs.

AFN Secretary-General Rita Mosinidi signed the release on Thursday. It states that trials are being held to choose athletes who will represent Nigeria in the following events: the African Senior Athletics Championships in Douala, Cameroon, from June 21–26, 2024; the Olympic Games in Paris, France, from July 26–August 11; and the World U-20 Championship in Lima, Peru, from August 27–31, 2024.

All athletes are advised to participate in the trials to be eligible for selection for the African Senior Championships, Olympic Games, and World U-20 Championships, regardless of their qualification status.

This directive makes it mandatory for all athletes who have secured tickets to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris to take part in the trials.

Ese Brume is the latest athlete to have sealed the event after leaping to a mark of 6.87 m at the Adidas Atlanta City Games to join Ruth Usoro as the second Nigerian long jumper.

This is no doubt a testament to the growing prowess and capabilities of Nigerian women in various sports.

The growing list of qualifiers includes wrestler Adekuoroye Adegoroye, Elizabeth Anyanacho, Oly, a Taekwondoist, Tobi Amusan, the world record holder in the 100-metre hurdles, the women’s basketball team, and D’ Tigress, the Super Falcons.
