AI’s Race for US Energy Competes against Bitcoin Mining

The demand for electricity from U.S. technology companies is increasing rapidly as they expand their artificial intelligence and cloud computing data centres. This surge in power consumption is creating a scramble for energy assets, with giant companies like Amazon and Microsoft competing for access to vast amounts of electricity.

This competition is impacting the cryptocurrency mining industry, with some miners profiting from leasing or selling their power infrastructure to tech companies, while others are losing access to the electricity needed to sustain their operations.

As technology companies pour funds into expanding their computing hubs, data centres could consume up to 9% of total electricity generated in the U.S. by 2030, more than doubling their current consumption. In comparison, crypto mining currently accounts for roughly 0.4% of global electricity consumption and analysts expect that 20% of bitcoin miner power capacity will pivot to AI by the end of 2027.

While there are opportunities for crypto miners to sell assets and infrastructure to tech giants eyeing nuclear-powered data centres or other energy sources, the transition may not be seamless for most miners due to the high costs associated with building AI data centres.

Many crypto miners face barriers to accessing capital after a bitcoin price crash in 2022. They also lack the resources and speed needed compared to hyper-scaling AI companies with billions of dollars at their disposal. As a result, some miners are sticking with crypto mining as their core business rather than transitioning into AI or cloud computing.

Overall, the battle between major tech players pursuing energy assets held by Bitcoin miners reflects an intense need for electricity as these companies compete in the race towards dominance in artificial intelligence and cloud computing capabilities.
