Alex Ikwechegh Issues Public Apology After Assaulting E-Hailing Driver

A member of the House of Representatives, Alex Ikwechegh, has publicly apologized for his recent assault on a Bolt driver who came to deliver a package to him.

In a statement released on Monday, Ikwechegh acknowledged that his behavior did not align with the standards expected of a public official. “As a public servant, I recognize the trust placed in me by my constituents and the Nigerian people. My behavior fell short of the standards expected of me, and for that, I am truly sorry,” he said.

The lawmaker expressed regret for the harm and embarrassment his actions caused the driver, Abuwatseya, his constituents, and the broader public. He confirmed his cooperation with the Nigerian Police and pledged to support their investigation into the incident.

Ikwechegh’s statement addressed the troubling situation that unfolded at his residence, where a viral video captured him physically assaulting the driver. Reports indicate that the confrontation escalated after the driver requested that Ikwechegh come outside to receive the package. In the footage, the visibly agitated lawmaker is seen slapping and verbally abusing the driver, even threatening to make him “disappear” without facing consequences.

“This incident is unacceptable and unbecoming of a public official,” Ikwechegh stated. He commended the Nigerian Police Force for their commitment to upholding the law and protecting citizens’ rights, while also acknowledging the swift condemnation of his actions by his party.

In an effort to address the underlying issues that led to the incident, Ikwechegh has committed to seeking professional counseling and engaging in community service initiatives aimed at promoting respect and empathy.

“I urge all Nigerians to join me in fostering a culture of respect, tolerance, and understanding. We must work together to build a society where everyone is treated with dignity,” he added.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with many condemning Ikwechegh’s actions. Following the assault, he was summoned by police for questioning at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters.

The police have also criticized him for bringing disrepute to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, after he dared the driver to contact the IG for help.
