Alibaba Hopes on AI Tools for Overseas Merchants – Zhang

Alibaba’s international e-commerce arm is leveraging generative AI-powered tools to assist cross-border merchants with tasks like translation, content creation, and product returns, as highlighted by group vice president Kaifu Zhang.

At a conference in Singapore, Zhang emphasized the significance of AI for Alibaba International Digital Commerce amid escalating tensions between China and the U.S., noting that China is comparable to the U.S. in AI innovation rates.

Alibaba, a tech powerhouse, is recalibrating its strategies to enhance the competitiveness of its global platforms, such as AliExpress and Lazada, following the reorganization of its international e-commerce division. Despite losing some early advantages, Alibaba International Digital Commerce Group under Zhang’s leadership has achieved significant milestones with 300 million consumers annually and a network of over one million merchants worldwide.

The unit has emerged as a key growth driver for Alibaba, evident in its robust financial performance with a 44% earnings surge from October to December compared to the previous year. Amidst intensifying competition, Alibaba remains optimistic about the transformative potential of AI technologies to empower businesses in the international e-commerce landscape.
