Amaju Pinnick Misses Out on Re-election to FIFA Council by One Vote

Former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president Amaju Pinnick narrowly lost his bid for re-election to the FIFA Council at the Confederation of African Football (CAF) General Assembly in Cairo on Wednesday.

Pinnick secured 28 votes, just one short of the 29 votes needed to clinch the last available seat, with Djibouti’s Souleiman Waberi edging him out.

Morocco’s Fouzi Lekjaa led the election with 49 votes, while Egypt’s Hani Rida and Niger’s Djibrilla Hamidou each garnered 35 votes. Mauritania’s Ahmed Yahya and Waberi also secured seats with 29 votes each.

Pinnick had served on FIFA’s highest decision-making body since 2021 and had hoped to extend his tenure.

In the women’s election, Kanizat Ibrahim from Comoros emerged victorious with 30 votes, surpassing Lydia Nsekera (13 votes) and Isha Johansen (7 votes).
