The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has fully supported President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, attributing the move to the actions of the suspended governor, Siminalayi Fubara. The party claims that Fubara’s behavior and decisions led to the necessity of the emergency rule in the state.
In a statement, APC spokesperson Felix Morka emphasized that Fubara was responsible for the unfolding events in Rivers, listing various impeachable offenses. He argued that Fubara’s demolition of the Rivers State House of Assembly was a direct attack on democracy in the state and a key factor in the current crisis.
Morka explained that Fubara’s governance without a legislature amounted to a breakdown of government in the state, adding that the governor’s use of state funds without legislative approval undermined the constitutional foundation of his office. He argued that a state cannot function without the three branches of government executive, legislative, and judiciary and Fubara’s actions had effectively dismantled the legislature, thus ending the government.
The APC spokesman further cited a Supreme Court ruling that confirmed there was no functioning government in Rivers State due to Fubara’s actions. Morka stated that Fubara, by his “reckless actions,” had essentially called for the state of emergency.
He commended President Tinubu for declaring the state of emergency, calling it a necessary and constitutionally supported action to safeguard the people and ensure governance is restored in Rivers State. The APC highlighted that the safety and well-being of the citizens must take precedence over political concerns.
Morka praised Tinubu for his leadership and foresight in preventing a potential collapse of law and order in the state, framing the decision as a courageous and responsible step to restore stability.
