The Federal Government has enhanced the Nigerian Army’s operational capabilities by acquiring forty-three Bayraktar TB2 drones, which will primarily be deployed in the North-West region to support military operations.
This was announced by Brigadier General U.G. Ogeleka, the Commander of the Nigerian Army Space Command, during a winging ceremony in Abuja.
General Ogeleka explained that the initiative, named Project Guardian, is aimed at bolstering military efforts against insurgency and other security challenges in the region. He shared that between May and September 2022, a group of 35 officers and 11 soldiers from the Nigerian Army’s routinely piloted aircraft system regiments underwent specialized training in Turkey on the operation and maintenance of the Bayraktar TB2 drones.
The trained personnel include 14 multi-piloted aircraft pilots, seven mission operators, and 23 engineers and technicians, including avionics and mechanical experts. General Ogeleka presented 22 of the trained personnel during the winging ceremony, noting that the remaining personnel are currently engaged in operational duties.
