Army chief urges soldiers to make Nigeria safer

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has called on Nigerian Army troops to enhance national security, ensuring the safety and well-being of all Nigerians. Oluyede made the appeal during his maiden operational visit to the 12 Brigade Nigerian Army, Charimaigumeri Barracks in Lokoja on Sunday

In his address, the COAS praised the troops for their dedication and sacrifices in safeguarding the nation, defending its sovereignty, and protecting its interests. He acknowledged the ongoing security challenges across the Northwest, Northeast, North Central, and other parts of the country, urging the troops to rise to the occasion and do more. “Every Nigerian is looking up to us to make the country safer, and this will require increased commitment, a stronger sense of duty, responsibility, and greater courage from us,” he said.

Lt. Gen. Oluyede also reaffirmed his commitment to prioritizing the welfare of soldiers and their families, recognizing the sacrifices they make for the nation. He highlighted several initiatives, including an increase in the ration cash allowance (RCA) and instructors’ allowance, as well as a new affordable housing scheme to help soldiers secure homes after their service.

The COAS assured the troops of continued support, including the regular provision of uniforms, kits, and combat enablers, as well as improved office and residential accommodation. He also emphasized the availability of a soft loan scheme for troops facing financial challenges, encouraging them to take advantage of these benefits to secure homes for their future.

In his address, Oluyede advised the soldiers to live within their means, cautioning against extravagant lifestyles. He reiterated that the Nigerian Army would continue to do its best within available resources to improve conditions for the troops and their families.

During the visit, Brig. Gen. Kasim Sidi, the Commander of the 12 Brigade NA Lokoja, led the COAS and his entourage on a tour of completed and ongoing projects within the barracks. The COAS also participated in the commissioning of an electrically powered borehole with a 6,000-litre capacity and laid the foundation for three blocks of two-bedroom, semi-detached quarters for senior non-commissioned officers. Additionally, he inspected the newly remodelled 12 Brigade Medical Centre.

Joining Oluyede on the visit were Maj. Gen. Obinna Onubogu, the General Officer Commanding 2 Division, and other senior Nigerian Army officers.
