Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has assessed the club’s title chances, suggesting that they had a “generous” 20% chance of winning the English Premier League (EPL) trophy.
Arsenal had an opportunity to narrow the gap on leaders Liverpool after the Reds squandered four points in three games.
However, Mikel Arteta’s team failed to capitalise, losing at home to West Ham on Saturday.
Their EPL title hopes took another hit as they watched Liverpool strengthen their position at the top of the table, with Mohamed Salah scoring and assisting in a crucial 2-0 victory over reigning champions Manchester City.
With that result, Liverpool moved 11 points clear of second-placed Arsenal, though they have played one more game.
Wenger, speaking on beIN SPORTS during halftime at the Etihad, acknowledged that Arsenal’s hopes of winning the EPL title are fading.
“If Liverpool win today then you could say it’s 80% [likely they win the title],” Wenger said.
When asked about Arsenal’s chances, he added: “You have to keep hope! [Arsenal have] a 20% chance. Maybe I’m being generous…
“But with 11 games to go, 11 points ahead and one more game played, of course, you would be surprised.
“If Liverpool win today they’ve lost only one game since the start of the season and you wouldn’t think they would lose four games in the last 11.
