At Least Four Dead, Six Injured in South Korea Highway Overpass Collapse

A highway overpass collapsed in Cheonan, South Korea, on Tuesday morning, killing at least four construction workers and injuring six others, with five of the injured reported in serious condition. Two of the deceased were Chinese nationals, according to local authorities.

Dashcam footage aired by YTN showed the overpass’s massive deck suddenly crashing down onto the road below. The site, part of an ongoing road construction project, was free of passenger vehicles at the time.

The National Fire Agency responded quickly after receiving the first report at 9:49 a.m. from the highway construction site in Anseong, South Chungcheong Province.

Emergency crews arrived within 10 minutes and launched a rescue operation. By 2:31 p.m., all workers were accounted for, with two additional deaths confirmed after rescuers discovered two severely injured workers in cardiac arrest.

The fire agency deployed 48 fire trucks, 147 firefighters, and three helicopters to the scene. Authorities are investigating the collapse’s cause, with initial reports suggesting the movement of beams between piers may have contributed.

Hyundai Engineering & Construction, responsible for the project, expressed deep condolences and pledged full cooperation with investigations into the incident.
