Australia Braces For Devastating Cyclone Alfred, Residents Urged To Evacuate

Australia’s east coast is on high alert as Tropical Cyclone Alfred approaches Brisbane, bringing the threat of destructive winds, heavy rainfall, and severe flooding. Authorities have urged residents in flood-prone areas to evacuate immediately, warning of potentially life-threatening conditions.
Storm warnings have been issued across a 500-kilometre stretch of Queensland and New South Wales, affecting millions of people. Cyclone Alfred is expected to make landfall early Friday as a category-two storm, with wind speeds reaching 155 kph (96 mph).
Forecasters predict rainfall totals of up to 800 mm (31.5 inches) in some areas—more than the monthly average for March—which could lead to catastrophic flash flooding.
Queensland Premier David Crisafulli emphsed the seriousness of the situation, noting that this part of the state has not experienced a cyclone in decades. He urged residents to heed evacuation orders and prepare for the worst.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has pledged federal support, deploying heavy-lift helicopters and offering additional resources as needed.
As the cyclone nears, many residents have already left their homes, with evacuation centres rapidly filling up. Supplies such as sandbags and essential groceries are running low as people stock up in preparation for the storm.
In anticipation of severe conditions, schools and public transport in southeast Queensland and northern New South Wales will shut down from Thursday, while authorities in New South Wales have ordered the closure of 122 schools and advised vulnerable residents to relocate.
The last time a cyclone threatened Brisbane was in 1990, though it changed course before making landfall. The region has not faced a direct cyclone hit in over 50 years, making Cyclone Alfred an exceptionally rare and dangerous event.
With heavy rainfall and damaging winds expected to batter the region for at least the next 48 hours, authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.
