The Bangladesh High Commissioner to Nigeria, Masudur Rahman, has highlighted the significant growth in bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Nigeria, pointing out that trade between the two nations has more than doubled in recent years, rising from $50 million to over $100 million.
Rahman made these remarks on Wednesday in Abuja during a reception to mark Bangladesh’s 54th Independence and National Day celebrations. He underscored the growing mutual interest among businesses and entrepreneurs in both countries to form partnerships that benefit both economies.
During his speech, Rahman also pointed to the increasing collaboration across various sectors, including ICT, agriculture, knitwear, government-to-state trade, as well as defense and diplomatic training facilitated through university partnerships.
“Bangladesh has deep roots in Africa, especially in Nigeria. Our people share common aspirations,” Rahman said, emphasizing the flourishing ties between the two nations.
The High Commissioner also revealed plans to further enhance the relationship through expanding engagement in the blue economy, which he described as a promising area for economic growth and cooperation.
He spoke about the shared values between Bangladesh and Nigeria, particularly their mutual desire for a society that is founded on equality, inclusivity, and free from exploitation. Rahman also stressed the need to leverage demographic diversity, bridge the digital divide, and ensure sustainable growth for future generations.
Reaffirming Bangladesh’s commitment to strengthening its bilateral relations with Nigeria, Rahman expressed hope for deeper cooperation in the coming years.
On behalf of Nigeria, Wahab Akande, the Chief of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, congratulated Bangladesh on its anniversary. He recalled the long-standing friendship between the two nations since establishing diplomatic ties in 1976 and praised the continued cordiality in their relations.
Akande commended the collaborative efforts in boosting trade and economic cooperation, expressing optimism about the future of Nigeria-Bangladesh relations and the potential for even greater engagement.
