The police in Bauchi State have raised concerns about the planned nationwide “Take It Back Movement” protest, urging organizers to reconsider and postpone the event.
The protest, scheduled for Monday, coincides with National Police Day, a day dedicated to recognizing the resilience and dedication of officers within the Nigeria Police Force.
The spokesperson for the command, CSP Ahmed Wakil shared this information with the press on Sunday, while affirming citizens’ constitutional rights to peaceful assembly. However, the police questioned the timing and motivations behind holding protests on a day meant to honor the nation’s security personnel.
Describing the protest as potentially “unpatriotic,” the police warned that it could damage the image of both the police and the country. They also pointed out that the organizers had not formally notified any security agency nor requested the necessary security coverage for the event.
As a result, the police command strongly advised the organizers to postpone the protest, citing growing security concerns and the importance of prioritizing public safety. Wakil added that the Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, had instructed all Area Commanders, Tactical Units, and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) to increase patrols in potential flashpoints throughout Bauchi State.
The police also reaffirmed their commitment to carrying out their duties in accordance with the law, while respecting human rights, and encouraged the organizers and potential participants to engage in dialogue with the appropriate government bodies to express their concerns.
