Bello Lawal Elected New President of ALGON, Vows to Champion Local Government Autonomy

The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has elected Bello Lawal, the Chairman of Kaita Local Government Area and Katsina State ALGON Chairman, as its new president.

The election occurred during the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Tuesday in Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa State.

This leadership change follows the expiration of the tenure of Aminu Mua’zu Maifata, the former Chairman of Lafia Local Government Area, whose term concluded on October 8, 2024. The transition was overseen by Odunayo Ategbero, the National Chairman of ALGON’s Board of Trustees.

Bello Lawal was elected alongside other officials tasked with leading the association. In his acceptance speech, he expressed deep gratitude to the NEC members for their trust and pledged to build on the successes of his predecessor. “I am deeply honoured by this responsibility, and I assure you all that I will give my very best to further the cause of this great organization,” Lawal stated. He emphasized his commitment to advocating for local government autonomy, highlighting it as a critical objective for ALGON.

“I appeal to all members to work together with me to achieve the vision we all share for strengthening governance at the local level,” Lawal added, calling for unity and cooperation among members to achieve their common goals.

Outgoing President Aminu Mu’azu Maifata congratulated Lawal in his farewell speech and encouraged ALGON members to fully support the new leadership.

He praised the NEC for conducting a peaceful and transparent election and expressed confidence in Lawal’s capability to guide the association forward. “I have no doubt that Bello Lawal will lead ALGON to greater heights. I call on all of you to give him the same cooperation you gave me during my tenure,” Maifata said during the handover ceremony.
