Borno: Zulum Begins North’s First Metro Rail Network

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has announced plans to construct an intra-city rail network connecting Maiduguri and its surrounding areas, marking the first such initiative by any northern state in Nigeria. The project’s first phase will include 12 designated terminals within Maiduguri, designed to connect key locations such as major markets, schools, and other public and economic hubs.

This rail network, which may eventually expand to cover other local government areas, aims to facilitate the smooth movement of people and goods, fostering economic growth and opening new corridors for business across the state. The project is being developed in collaboration with Eighteenth Engineering Company (EEC), with feasibility studies, environmental risk assessments, and community consultations currently underway.

Borno’s Commissioner for Transport and Energy, Aliyu Mohammed Bamanga, highlighted that once completed, the rail system will enhance transportation, revitalize the economy, create job opportunities, and modernize the city’s transport infrastructure. The project is designed to be energy-efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly.

Additionally, the rail network will complement other ongoing transportation initiatives, such as the 113-kilometre expansion of Maiduguri’s East, West, and South ring roads, which will connect key areas including Auno, Molai, Polo, and Shagari low-cost communities.

Governor Zulum has also introduced electric and gas-powered taxis and buses at subsidized rates to ease the burden of rising transportation and living costs following the fuel subsidy removal.

His administration continues to focus on urban and rural infrastructure projects, aimed at restoring peace and economic stability in Borno State after the prolonged impacts of the Boko Haram insurgency.
