President Bola Tinubu has declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, citing prolonged political instability in the region. In a nationwide broadcast on Tuesday, the President suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for six months.
Tinubu invoked Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution, which allows the government to suspend normal constitutional procedures in times of national danger or crisis.
“Having soberly reflected on and evaluated the political situation in Rivers State, and with the Governor and Deputy Governor failing to request my intervention as required by law, it has become compelling for me to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State with effect from today, March 18, 2025,” Tinubu stated.
