Burna Boy and Rema Make History at 2023 Billboard Music Awards

In a groundbreaking moment for Afrobeat, Burna Boy and Rema emerged as the inaugural winners of the Afrobeat categories at the 2023 Billboard Music Awards, held on Sunday, November 19, 2023.

Burna Boy secured the title of ‘Top Afrobeats Artiste,’ surpassing formidable competitors such as Wizkid, Rema, Tems, and Cameroonian star Libianca. This historic win marked Burna Boy as the first-ever recipient of the newly-established category.

Rema’s remix of ‘Calm Down’ featuring Selena Gomez clinched the award for the ‘Top Afrobeats Song,’ adding another accolade to his impressive repertoire.

During his acceptance speech, Burna Boy expressed gratitude to the Billboard Music Awards and dedicated the win to Africa and every artist emerging from the continent.

He envisioned a bright future for African artists and assured that what the world witnessed was just the beginning.

The Billboard Music Awards recognized outstanding achievements in music, considering factors such as album and digital song sales, streaming numbers, radio airplay, touring success, and social engagement.

Both Burna Boy and Rema, Nigerian pop sensations, had recently achieved significant milestones in their careers.

Rema sold out the 20,000-capacity O2 Arena in London on November 14, while Burna Boy, in support of his latest album ‘I Told Them,’ performed at the Toyota Center in Houston as part of a 16-city marathon.

In a night dominated by music talents, U.S,. artist Morgan Wallen secured 11 victories, while Taylor Swift, among female artists, claimed the most accolades with 10 prizes, including the prestigious ‘Top Artist’ Award.
