Chelsea and Arsenal are reportedly both keen on signing Porto forward Samu Aghehowa during the upcoming summer transfer window. The 20-year-old, who was heavily linked with a move to Chelsea last summer from Atletico Madrid, opted for a switch to Porto, and his performances this season have been impressive.
He has scored 19 goals and registered three assists in 31 appearances, including 13 goals and three assists in 19 league games. Aghehowa has also netted six goals in nine Europa League appearances, with two of those coming against Manchester United.
According to CaughtOffside, Chelsea is looking to reignite their interest in the forward this summer, but Arsenal is also firmly in the race. The Gunners are in need of a new striker and view Aghehowa as a potential solution.
Despite the €100m (£82.5m) release clause in his Porto contract, both Chelsea and Arsenal believe that an offer in the region of €50m (£41m) could be enough to secure the striker’s services.
Aston Villa and West Ham United are also said to be interested in Aghehowa, but Chelsea and Arsenal are believed to be the frontrunners in the race for his signature. Spain considers Aghehowa a key part of their future plans, with the young striker continuing to shine at a major club after his eight goals on loan at Alaves in La Liga last season.
The transfer saga has not been without its challenges for Aghehowa. Last year, he admitted that it was “a very difficult summer” due to the uncertainty surrounding his future, with a potential move to Chelsea falling through despite a £35m fee reportedly being agreed with Atletico Madrid.
In an emotional interview, he revealed the tough period he went through, including feeling detached from his role at Atletico Madrid, training separately, and struggling mentally. However, Aghehowa ultimately found solace in his decision to join Porto, which has paid off with his stellar performances this season.
It seems that, despite the hurdles, Aghehowa’s future remains bright, and top clubs like Chelsea and Arsenal are keeping a close eye on his progress.
