China to Introduce AI Courses in Schools as Part of Push for Global Dominance in Technology

China is set to introduce artificial intelligence (AI) courses in primary and secondary schools, reinforcing the country’s ambition to lead the AI sector globally. Starting from the upcoming fall semester on September 1, schools in Beijing will offer at least eight hours of AI classes periodically.
The Beijing Municipal Education Commission outlined in a statement that these AI classes could either be standalone courses or integrated into existing subjects such as information technology and science. The move is part of the country’s broader strategy to embed AI education early, fostering future generations skilled in the field.
The statement also emphasizes the creation of specialized courses designed to meet national curriculum standards, with a focus on artificial intelligence. “Schools will be required to build general municipal courses in line with national educational objectives, offering a comprehensive introduction to artificial intelligence,” the statement said.
The initiative includes the development of a “Beijing Local Curriculum Outline for Artificial Intelligence Education in Primary and Secondary Schools (Trial)” and the creation of AI teaching guidelines tailored to different educational stages. These will be supported by diverse learning materials that will evolve to reflect the latest technological advancements.
China’s push to enhance its AI capabilities comes amidst heightened competition with the United States, as both nations race to advance in AI development. Recently, China’s DeepSeek model made headlines by producing a leaner, faster AI model that competes with leading U.S. technology.
This educational overhaul aligns with the Chinese government’s broader commitment to advancing large-scale AI applications, as well as innovations in intelligent terminals and manufacturing equipment. Huai Jinpeng, China’s Minister of Education, recently announced that the government will release a white paper on AI education in 2025, further reinforcing the country’s ambitions in the AI space.
