China Urges Dialogue with US Amid Rising Trade Tensions

China called for renewed dialogue with the United States on Thursday, as escalating trade tensions between the two largest economies show no signs of abating. Both nations have imposed a series of tariffs on each other’s imports, leading to growing concerns over the economic fallout.
At a weekly press conference, Chinese commerce ministry spokeswoman He Yongqian reiterated China’s stance that the United States and China should approach their trade differences with a cooperative and positive mindset. “China has always advocated that both countries should adopt a positive and cooperative attitude towards differences and controversies in the economic and trade fields,” He said.
She also emphasized the importance of mutual respect, equality, and mutual benefit as the foundation for any form of communication or consultation. “Threats and intimidation can only be counterproductive,” she added. “It is hoped that the United States and China will work together to return to the correct track of resolving issues through dialogue and consultation.”
The trade conflict between the two nations has escalated under U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration, particularly since he took office in January. Trump’s tariffs have targeted major trading partners, including China, Canada, and Mexico, in part due to their failure to curb the flow of fentanyl and its precursor chemicals.
This month, Trump increased a 10-percent tariff previously imposed on Chinese products to 20 percent, further intensifying the standoff. In retaliation, Beijing imposed tariffs of up to 15 percent on a range of U.S. agricultural products, including soybeans, pork, and chicken.
Additionally, China, the world’s largest steel producer, pledged on Wednesday to take “all necessary measures” to safeguard its interests in response to new U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. The ongoing trade battle between the two economic giants continues to escalate, with no clear resolution in sight.
