China vows ‘firm and forceful measures’ in response to new U.S tariffs

China has vowed to take “firm and forceful” action to protect its interests following the imposition of steep 104 percent tariffs by the United States.

These new tariffs come after the U.S. had already implemented 10 percent tariffs over the weekend, with additional rate hikes on imports from major trading partners like the European Union and Japan taking effect on Wednesday.

China, which is both a leading economic competitor and a significant trading partner of the U.S., has been hit hardest, with the tariffs on its products now reaching a staggering 104 percent since President Trump returned to the White House.

In response, China’s foreign ministry spokesman, Lin Jian, emphasized that “the Chinese people’s legitimate right to development is inalienable.” He added, “China’s sovereignty, security, and development interests are inviolable,” and vowed that the country would continue to take “firm and forceful measures” to defend its rights and interests.

On the same day, Beijing’s commerce ministry also expressed its “firm will” to confront a trade war with the U.S., according to the state news agency Xinhua. The ministry stated, “With firm will and abundant means, China will resolutely take countermeasures and fight until the end if the United States insists on further escalating economic and trade restrictions.”
