China Warns of Readiness to Fight Any War with the U.S. Amid Rising Trade Tensions

China on Wednesday issued a stern warning in response to President Donald Trump’s escalating trade measures, signaling its readiness to engage in “any type” of war with the U.S. following the imposition of higher tariffs on Chinese imports.

On Tuesday, President Trump raised tariffs on Chinese goods to 20%, prompting China to retaliate by imposing 15% tariffs on U.S. agricultural products. In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), the Chinese Embassy in Washington declared: “If war is what the U.S. wants be it a tariff war, a trade war, or any other type of war we’re ready to fight till the end.”

The escalating tensions come as both nations continue to clash over trade policies, with China responding strongly to U.S. tariff hikes. The Chinese government’s message underscores the growing animosity between the two economic giants, with each side digging in its heels on their respective positions. Beijing’s latest statement indicated that it would not be intimidated or coerced by U.S. actions.

The Chinese Embassy also criticized the U.S. for using the fentanyl crisis as a pretext for imposing further tariffs, claiming that Washington was unfairly shifting blame onto China. The embassy suggested that if the U.S. was serious about tackling the fentanyl issue, it should engage with China on equal terms. “If the U.S. truly wants to solve the fentanyl issue, then the right thing to do is to consult with China by treating each other as equals,” the embassy stated.

China further expressed frustration with the U.S.’s approach, arguing that it had already made significant efforts to assist the U.S. in combating the fentanyl crisis. In a pointed rebuke, the statement read: “Instead of recognizing our efforts, the U.S. has sought to smear and shift blame to China, and is seeking to pressure and blackmail China with tariff hikes. They’ve been punishing us for helping them.”

The Chinese government emphasized that it would not be intimidated by U.S. actions. “Intimidation does not scare us. Bullying does not work on us. Pressuring, coercion, or threats are not the right way of dealing with China,” the embassy said, warning that those who sought to apply maximum pressure on China were making a “miscalculation.”

Meanwhile, in a related move, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada had implemented 25% tariffs on $155 billion worth of U.S. imports in response to Washington’s latest trade measures. Trudeau confirmed on X that Canada would target $30 billion worth of U.S. products immediately, with the remaining $125 billion to follow in 21 days.

The tariff impositions from Canada come on the heels of the U.S. decision to implement 25% tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico, as well as increased levies on Chinese imports. Trudeau’s statement signaled Canada’s intent to respond firmly to the trade measures enacted by the U.S.

As the trade war between the U.S. and China intensifies, the global economic landscape faces significant uncertainty, with countries like Canada now also drawn into the escalating conflict.
