CJN Summons Judges Over Conflicting Rulings in Rivers State

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has called for an urgent investigation into conflicting rulings related to political cases in Rivers State. A panel from the National Judicial Council (NJC) will conduct the probe, with a report due this week.

The panel will be led by a former Court of Appeal justice, alongside two heads of courts. This move follows formal complaints submitted to the NJC regarding the judges involved in these cases.

In addition, the CJN has summoned the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court for questioning on Tuesday. The Chief Judge of the Rivers State High Court is also expected to appear before the NJC panel next week.

Justice Kekere-Ekun has emphasized her commitment to combating corruption within the judiciary. During her screening before the Senate for confirmation as the substantive CJN on September 25, she pledged to uphold the integrity of the judiciary and ensure a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption.

She stated, “I am known for integrity and discipline, and I will ensure zero tolerance for corruption. There is a need to insulate the judiciary and push for better welfare for judicial officers to ensure they perform at their optimal.”

This investigation reflects the CJN’s determination to maintain the rule of law and strengthen public confidence in the judiciary amidst concerns over judicial integrity in political matters.
