Climate Change: NiMet Boss Advocates Issuance of Early Warnings

The Director-General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) Charles Anosike has advocated for issuance of early warnings to mitigate the hazard of climate change in the country.

In his keynote address at the annual Civil-Military Conference held in Abuja Anosike highlighted NiMet’s commitment to building human capacity and sharing knowledge to address the effects of climate change, including the rising frequency of extreme weather events and climate-induced conflicts.

The conference, themed “Whole-of-Society Approach to National Security and Development,” aimed to address the adverse impacts of climate change. Anosike stressed the need for early warnings, public awareness, prompt action, and the establishment of policies that incentivize and facilitate appropriate responses to climate challenges.

The conference also focused on consolidating the achievements of the 2023 edition, building public trust, enhancing aviation and space safety, combating misinformation, and improving coordination between military and civilian stakeholders. Other goals included advancing counter-terrorism strategies, managing migration, and fostering multi-stakeholder collaboration for national security and development.

Anosike assured that NiMet would continue to support the Armed Forces by providing reliable, accurate, and timely meteorological services. He emphasized that these services are crucial for enabling military operations under varying conditions—whether on land, water, or air—where weather information is vital.

He reiterated NiMet’s dedication to building human capacity and disseminating knowledge to address the challenges posed by climate change, the increasing frequency of extreme weather events, and prolonged climate-induced conflicts.
