Congo Set to Double Natural Gas Production by 2027, S&P Global Reports

The Republic of Congo is on track to more than double its natural gas production by 2027, driven by major projects spearheaded by Chinese developer Wing Wah and energy giant Eni, according to an optimistic forecast from S&P Global Commodity Insights.
The significant production boost will primarily come from two key developments: Wing Wah’s Banga Kayo and Eni’s Marine XII Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) projects. This projection was unveiled by Lucinda Valerie Ross, Senior Technical Research Analyst at S&P Global, during her presentation at the Congo Energy & Investment Forum (CEIF) in Brazzaville.
“Historically, Congo’s natural gas output has been relatively modest, but with these upcoming projects, we are seeing a marked increase,” Ross explained. “Eni’s phased approach using pre-existing FLNG vessels has already delivered initial gas production, and the focus now is on attracting further investment to maintain this growth trajectory.”
Eni’s Marine XII project is poised to become a game-changer, with plans to produce 2.4 million metric tons of LNG annually by 2025. This will rise significantly to an impressive 4.5 billion cubic meters per year by 2026, catering to both domestic needs and export markets.
Meanwhile, Wing Wah’s Banga Kayo project, spread across 25 years, is set to yield nearly 30 billion cubic meters of associated gas. It will be developed in four stages, each progressively increasing its capacity to meet the growing demand for LNG and LPG in the region.
Natural gas already plays a dominant role in Congo’s energy sector, powering more than 70% of the country’s electricity generation. Additionally, the oil and gas sector is a critical pillar of the economy, contributing 35% to GDP and a staggering 75% of export revenues.
With these ambitious projects, Congo is positioning itself as a key player in Africa’s energy landscape, and the coming years promise exciting developments for the country’s natural gas sector.
