Court Blocks PDP’s Move to Expel Senator Samuel Anyanwu

The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, has issued a major ruling preventing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), its acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, and the members of the party’s National Disciplinary Committee, led by former Foreign Affairs Minister Tom Ikimi, from expelling Senator Samuel Anyanwu from the party.

Justice Y. Halilu delivered the decision on March 20, following a Motion Ex-parte M/3951/2025 filed on March 17, 2025, alongside an affidavit detailing the urgency of the matter. Anyanwu’s legal team, led by K.C. O Njemanze and M.L. Young-Arney, presented their arguments before the court.

The controversy erupted after the PDP’s National Disciplinary Committee, chaired by Ikimi, recommended Anyanwu’s expulsion over allegations of anti-party activities.

The committee’s report, which was presented to Damagum on March 11, accused Anyanwu of engaging in actions that disrupted party operations, including bringing external security forces and thugs to interfere with the PDP’s internal affairs at the party’s headquarters in Wadata Plaza, Abuja, on January 29 and February 1, 2025.

In response, the High Court issued an interim injunction halting the PDP from accepting, acting upon, or implementing the committee’s decision to expel Anyanwu until further hearings.

The court’s order prohibits Damagum, Ikimi, and other party officials from suspending or expelling Anyanwu or taking any actions that could jeopardize his membership in the PDP until the full hearing on April 7, 2025.

The motion is set to be heard in full next month, marking a crucial development in the ongoing political and legal battle within the PDP.

This court ruling provides a temporary but significant reprieve for Anyanwu, as it challenges both the internal dynamics of the party and the broader political implications for his future in the PDP.
