The Lagos State High Court at Tafawa Balewa Square has announced May 2, 2025, as the date for delivering its judgment in the case of Andrew Ominikoron, the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver accused of the brutal rape and murder of 22-year-old fashion designer, Bamise Ayanwola.
Justice Sherifat Sonaike made the announcement after both the defense and prosecution presented their final written addresses. Ominikoron, 47, has been facing a five-count charge that includes rape, conspiracy, felony, sexual assault, and murder, following the tragic events that unfolded in February 2022.
The prosecution alleges that on February 26, 2022, Ominikoron, while driving his BRT bus along the Lekki-Ajah Expressway and Carter Bridge, attacked Ayanwola, who was a passenger at the time.
According to the charges, Ominikoron conspired with others—who remain at large—to commit the heinous crime. The prosecution also claims that Ominikoron had previously raped a 29-year-old woman, Maryjane Odezulu, on November 25, 2021.
The charges against Ominikoron are in violation of Sections 411, 223, 260, and 165 of the Lagos State Criminal Law of 2015, which carry severe punishments under the law.
Despite the serious allegations, Ominikoron, who was arraigned in March 2022, has consistently pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
During his defense, which began on October 17, 2024, the 47-year-old driver denied both the rape and murder accusations, claiming he had no involvement in the death of Ayanwola.
As the court prepares to hand down its verdict, the case has garnered widespread public attention, highlighting the need for justice and accountability.
With the trial now in its final stages, the people of Lagos and beyond await the court’s decision on a case that has deeply shaken the city and the nation.
