Customs Boss Claims Revenue Service Bill Will Drive Us Out of Business

The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, has expressed concerns that the proposed Nigeria Revenue Service Bill in the National Assembly threatens the existence of his agency.

He made this statement during a public hearing of the House of Representatives Committee on Finance on Wednesday. In his submission, Adeniyi highlighted conflicting jurisdictional issues with the proposed Bill.

He explained, “The Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill 2024, Section 1, provides a legal framework for the administration of taxes and revenue under any law, while Section 42 defines tax. This section effectively subsumes everything covered under Sections 3 and 4 of the NCS Act, 2023.”

Adeniyi emphasized the need for collaboration and integration between Customs and tax authorities rather than abolishing Customs or repealing existing laws in favor of new legislation.
