Dangote to Build Seaport, Cement Plant Projects in Ogun State

Aliko Dangote has announced plans to build a major seaport and expand cement production in Ogun State.

During a meeting with Ogun State officials on Monday, Dangote shared with Governor Dapo Abiodun and the Executive Council that his company intends to construct what he called “the largest port in the country” at the Olokola Free Trade Zone, revitalizing previously abandoned investment projects in the area.

In addition, Dangote revealed that two new cement production lines are under construction at Itori, with a combined capacity of 6 million metric tons per year. Once completed, these new lines will complement the existing 12 million metric ton plant at Ibeshe.

Dangote recounted the challenges his company faced at Itori, mentioning that their factory had been demolished twice. “When we started the second time, they not only demolished the factory but also the fence, so we left. But right now, because of His Excellency, our governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, we are back,” he said.

Governor Abiodun expressed his support for the announcements, emphasizing that the expansion of cement production would make Ogun State the largest cement producer in sub-Saharan Africa, with a total capacity of 18 million metric tons. Dangote also highlighted that 70% of his company’s cement production in Africa is currently based in Nigeria, with the Obajana plant in Kogi State contributing 16.25 million metric tons annually.

Following the meeting, the delegation visited the Itori cement plant’s construction site and toured the Papalanto concrete-paved road, which is being developed under the federal government’s tax credit scheme.

Local traditional leaders, including the Olu of Itori, Oba Abdulfatai Akorede Akamo, were present for parts of the visit.
