Dele Farotimi Arrives at Ekiti Magistrate Court for Trial

The embattled human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi has arrived at the Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti. This follows a ruling by Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun, who had previously reserved judgment on Farotimi’s bail application until December 20, while ordering his remand in prison.

Farotimi’s counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, had filed a preliminary objection, urging the court to strike out the charge against his client. Olumide-Fusika argued that the charge was legally invalid, as defamation is not recognized under the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.

Dressed in a black pair of pants and a pitch-top, Farotimi arrived at the court premises around 9:45 am, greeted by tight security. His supporters were present, chanting in solidarity with him and his fight for freedom, raising their fists in unison.

Farotimi is facing prosecution at the chief magistrate’s court in Ado-Ekiti for allegedly defaming Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Afe Babalola.

His arrest has sparked widespread public outcry, with many Nigerians demanding his immediate release. Among those calling for his release are former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and politician and human rights activist Omoyele Sowore.
