
The Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives Adewunmi Onanuga, has passed away at the age of 59. She died on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, after a brief illness. Onanuga, who represented the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State, was known for her strong advocacy and dedicated service to the nation.
Onanuga, born on December 2, 1965, was widely admired for her intellect, passion, and humility. As a lawmaker, she earned the respect of her colleagues and constituents alike. Her impactful contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly in the areas of women’s empowerment and social welfare, earned her a lasting legacy.
The Green Chamber expressed deep sorrow over her sudden passing, highlighting her tireless commitment to public service. Reps spokesman Akin Rotimi described her as a passionate advocate and a dedicated lawmaker whose legacy of service would continue to inspire future generations.
In his condolence message, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun described Onanuga’s death as a monumental loss to both Ogun State and Nigeria as a whole. He praised her as a fearless leader, loyal party member, and a key mobilizer who worked relentlessly for the advancement of women and the well-being of her constituents.
Onanuga was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2019 on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). In the 9th Assembly, she chaired the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, championing policies to empower women and improve social welfare. She was re-elected in 2023 and appointed Deputy Chief Whip of the 10th Assembly.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by her family in due course. The National Assembly and the people of Ogun State will mourn her loss, remembering her as a vibrant, committed lawmaker who dedicated her life to public service.
