Best known for portraying Captain Mike Yates of UNIT in Doctor Who from 1971 to 1974, Franklin played a significant role in the series, contributing to the Doctor’s adventures in repelling alien invasions on Earth.

His portrayal of Captain Yates left an indelible mark on Doctor Who enthusiasts, and he continued to reprise the role in one-off episodes, including the 20th-anniversary special in 1983.

In addition to his Doctor Who legacy, Franklin graced the screens of ITV’s Emmerdale, where he played the character Denis Rigg, leaving a lasting impression on soap opera fans.

His versatile career also included appearances in Crossroads and other notable TV and theatre productions.

Colleagues and fans alike have expressed their condolences, with Katy Manning, who starred alongside Franklin in Doctor Who, paying tribute to the “wonderful brave captain Yates.”
