The driver of a Toyota Camry, with the registration number LSR 293 HJ, narrowly escaped death on Monday after a 40-foot container fell onto the vehicle at Mile 2, en route to Apapa, Lagos State.
According to a statement from Adebayo Taofiq, Director of the Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the driver was rescued alive thanks to the swift and coordinated efforts of LASTMA, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).
The victim received immediate medical attention after being rushed to the hospital by the joint rescue team.
During the operation, security was provided by officers from the Kirikiri Police Division, ensuring a secure environment for emergency responders. Once the driver was safely removed, the Toyota Camry was successfully lifted from under the container.
Efforts to remove the fallen container are ongoing, and LASTMA officers are managing the scene to alleviate traffic congestion and restore normal flow.
LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, emphasized the critical importance of properly securing containers by truck drivers and owners.
He warned that negligence in this area poses a serious risk to lives and property, urging strict adherence to road safety protocols to prevent such dangerous incidents.
“LASTMA is committed to ensuring the safety and efficiency of Lagos roadways and continues to work with key stakeholders to enforce traffic laws and enhance public safety,” Bakare-Oki added.
