ECOParl Joint Committee Harps On Promotion Of Health Policies In Africa

With the ECOWAS Parliament Joint Committee on Health/Education, Science and Culture/Telecommunications and Information Technology/Industry and Private Sector underway in Conakry, the capital city of Guinea, the Co-Chair of the Committee, Hon. Orlando Pereira has stated that the overall objective of the delocalised meeting is to raise awareness among MPs on health services and education with a view to enabling them to contribute significantly to the promotion of health policies in ECOWAS member states.

Speaking at the Opening Session, Pereira also commended the participants in glowing terms, especially the Chair, National Transitional Council of Guinea.

“Your presence among us, Members of the Community Parliament, is a proof of your commitment to the major objectives of our common organisation, the Economic Community of West African States
(ECOWAS), which aims to achieve regional integration.

“Your presence here also symbolizes the very strong relationship between
Guinea and ECOWAS. Given the present situation in our region, integration and cooperation are
more of a requirement than an option, and unilateralism has little prospect for success.

“On an operational level, the ECOWAS Parliament regularly organises
activities in the Member States, particularly through delocalised meetings of its Standing Committees, the main aim of which is to get closer to the people of the community.

“During these meetings, Parliamentarians would deliberate on issues relating to the community and all other subjects relating to the political, economic, and social situation affecting both the West African and international regions.

“It is against this backdrop that this meeting is being held here in Conakry, on the theme: “Promoting health care services and education in West Africa: The role of the ECOWAS Parliament”.

“The overall objective of the meeting is to raise awareness among MPs on health care services and education with a view to enabling them to
contribute significantly to the promotion of health policies in ECOWAS member States.
