Ecuadorian footballer and FC Cincinnati player Marco Angulo has died from injuries sustained in a car accident, the Ecuadorian Football Association announced on Tuesday.
Angulo’s former youth team teammate, Roberto Cabezas, also lost his life in the crash.
The 22-year-old Angulo was a passenger in a car that collided with a metal barrier on the Rumiñahui highway, southeast of Quito, on October 7.
Cabezas, who played for Independiente Juniors, was driving and was killed at the scene along with another passenger.
Angulo suffered severe head injuries and a lung contusion in the accident.
He was placed in an artificial coma but ultimately succumbed to his injuries on Monday night, according to reports from El Universo.
At the time of his passing, Angulo was playing for Ecuadorian league champions L.D.U. Quito on loan from his MLS club, FC Cincinnati.
Ecuador’s FA expressed deep sorrow, stating that Angulo “defended the colors of our country at every opportunity he had with his talent and dedication.
Marco was not only an outstanding player, but a great teammate. He leaves a deep pain in our hearts.”
A defensive midfielder, Angulo represented Ecuador in the Under-17 and Under-20 teams before making his senior debut in a friendly against Iraq in November 2022. He also appeared in another friendly against Australia in March 2023.
