Edo Governorship Election Petition Tribunal Set to Deliver Verdict on Ighodalo’s Challenge Against Okpebholo’s Victory

The Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja is poised to deliver its judgment on the case filed by Asue Ighodalo, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), challenging the results of the September 21, 2024 governorship election in the state.

The three-member panel, led by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, had reserved its decision on March 3, after both parties submitted their final written addresses.

Ighodalo and the PDP are contesting the election victory of Governor Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC), alleging that the election was marred by irregularities and did not comply with the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022.

Throughout the proceedings, the PDP and Ighodalo presented 19 witnesses and submitted various documents to support their claims. In contrast, the APC called only four witnesses, with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) refraining from calling any.

Supporters from both political sides have gathered in Abuja, eagerly awaiting the tribunal’s decision.

The reading of the judgment is expected to commence shortly.
