Edo Gov’ship Election: INEC threatens to sanction aspirants, parties over unlawful campaign

Aspirants and political parties have been instructed by Anugbum Onuoha, the Edo State Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission, to cease their gubernatorial campaigns immediately or face consequences.

The REC emphasized in his announcement on Monday in Benin that parties and candidates were anticipated to start their campaigns on April 24 and that the commission had not relaxed the campaign ban.

He further said that since the primary election is an internal matter, political parties were not expected to openly campaign for it.

He urged all the political parties and aspirants to pull down billboards, signposts, as well as adverts on television and newspapers.”

“They are not supposed to campaign publicly for the primary election. It is against the law.

“If they do not comply with this directive, we would have no other option than to sanction them.”

Onuoha added that his duty is to write a report and send it to the headquarters of the commission, not to announce results as the primary election is an internal affair.
