The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained 10 officers in connection with the alleged theft of operational items that they could not account for. The arrests followed direct orders from EFCC’s Executive Chairman, Ola Olukoyede.
While the EFCC’s official statement did not specify the stolen items, sources familiar with the case have revealed that the officers are suspected of breaking into the EFCC’s exhibit room and stealing foreign currency, gold, and other confiscated items.
The officers had unlawfully accessed the exhibit room and made off with the items in question. This development comes on the heels of the EFCC’s recent announcement about the dismissal of 27 staff members for their involvement in fraudulent activities.
According to the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the detention of the 10 officers is part of the commission’s ongoing efforts to cleanse the organization of corrupt practices. Oyewale confirmed that these officers, who were arrested last week, are being questioned over missing operational items and will face internal disciplinary actions if found guilty.
He said, “Investigators are making significant progress, and those found guilty will be subjected to internal disciplinary processes.”
